The paperwork, explained

P60 or P45 — what's the difference?

Not everyone knows these by name, but if you've worked in the UK, you almost certainly have one.

P60 — your end-of-year summary

A P60 is issued by your employer at the end of each tax year (around April/May). It shows your total pay for the year and the total tax you paid. If you're currently employed, you should receive one every year — check your payslip portal or ask your employer if you can't find it.

P45 — your leaving-a-job document

A P45 is given to you when you leave a job. It shows how much you were paid and how much tax you paid during that employment. If you've changed jobs recently, your old employer should have provided one.
